چکیده
The distinction between literal and figurative use is well-known embedded in ‘folk linguistics’. According to folk linguistics, uses deviate from ones. But recent work on lexical modulation polysemy shows that meaning deviation ubiquitous, even cases of use. A connectionist account of the emergence of the literal- metaphorical-anomalous distinction in young children
We present the first developmental computational model of metaphor comprehension, which seeks to relate the emergence of a distinction between literal and non-literal similarity in young children to the development of semantic representations. The model gradually learns to distinguish literal from metaphorical semantic juxtapositions as it acquires more knowledge about the vehicle domain. In ac...

Based on psychological studies which show that metaphors and other nonliteral constructions are comprehended in the same amount of time as comparable literal constructions, some researchers have concluded that literal meaning is not computed during metaphor comprehension. In this paper, we suggest that the empirical evidence does not rule out the possibility that literal meaning is constructed....

Recent work suggests that concreteness and imageability play an important role in the meanings of figurative expressions. We investigate this idea in several ways. First, we try to define more precisely the context within which a figurative expression may occur, by parsing a corpus annotated for metaphor. Next, we add both concreteness and imageability as “features” to the parsed metaphor corpu...

My article, “Literal meaning and psychological theory,” (Gibbs, 1984) attempted ...
